Kaleshwaram: how water climbs 518 metres
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project was built to lift Godavari water from Medigadda, 100 m above sea level, to reservoirs on the Deccan plateau up to 618 m. Explore every barrage, pump house and reservoir on the map, follow the water from start to finish, and see the figures from the official audit.
- 518 mTotal lift, from 100 m to 618 m
- 31Lifts as built (20 planned)
- 1,832 kmCanals, tunnels and pipelines (203 km of tunnels)
- 147.71 TMCStorage planned in all reservoirs
- 8,459.1 MWPumping power installed: 46.8% of the state's installed capacity
- 18,25,700New irrigation planned (acres)

The climb: from 100 m to 618 m
Each block is a pond or reservoir at its full level; each purple riser is a lift by one or more pump houses. Choose a step to find it on the map.
Levels are full reservoir levels (CAG line diagrams). A lift is the rise between levels; a pump's own design head can be higher (Nandi 105.5 m, Gayatri 118 m). Distances are not to scale: the sources publish no chainage.
The seven links
The project is split into seven links. Final contract values from the CAG audit; command areas from the irrigation department.
Link I
Medigadda to Yellampalli
Three barrages and three pump houses lift Godavari water 48 m, from Medigadda up to Yellampalli.
₹21,297 crore · 30,000 acres of command
Link II
Yellampalli to Mid Manair
Tunnels and two underground pump houses, Nandi and Gayatri, carry water 170 m up to Mid Manair.
₹23,822 crore
Link III
Mid Manair to Upper Manair
A branch west through Malkapet reservoir to Upper Manair.
₹1,737 crore · 86,150 acres of command
Link IV
Mid Manair to Kondapochamma Sagar
The longest and costliest link: five lifts and four new reservoirs up to 618 m.
₹41,190 crore · 5,89,280 acres of command
Link V
Mallanna Sagar to Gandhamalla and Baswapur
Gravity canals south towards Yadadri Bhuvanagiri; Gandhamalla reservoir had not been started by March 2022.
₹4,325 crore · 2,51,800 acres of command
Link VI
Mallanna Sagar to Singur
Canals and tunnels west to the Singur reservoir on the Manjira. The command area is 3.29 lakh acres in the department's note and 93,000 acres in the CAG's report.
₹2,507 crore · 3,29,042 acres of command
Link VII
Sriram Sagar to Nirmal and Adilabad areas
Ten small lifts from the Sriram Sagar foreshore to the north; none was complete by March 2022.
₹7,391 crore · 5,39,428 acres of command
All 56 works together: ₹1,02,268 crore in final contract values. The CAG put the likely final cost of the whole project, with interest during construction, at ₹1,47,427 crore.
Storage and power, side by side
Storage (TMC)
Installed pumping power (MW)
For the main contracts; the parallel "additional TMC" works add more. Installed power across the project is 8,459 MW.
The water: the plan and what was lifted
The plan, in TMC a year

- Godavari at Medigadda 195
- Yellampalli 20
- Groundwater 25
What it was for: 237 TMC
- Irrigation 169
- Hyderabad's drinking water 30

Water lifted at Medigadda, in TMC
Water lifted at Medigadda, as given by Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy in June 2025; he said about 63 TMC of it later flowed to the sea in floods. Former minister T. Harish Rao cites higher totals counted at later pump houses. Nothing was lifted at Medigadda in 2026.

Things worth knowing
The first 48 m, from Medigadda to Yellampalli, needed three barrages and three pump houses. The CAG puts the extra capital cost of drawing water at Medigadda at ₹21,897 crore, and Link I's electricity at ₹8.61 crore for every TMC lifted.
Running every pump at once would draw 203 million units a day, more than the whole state's average daily use in 2021-22 (196 million units), according to the CAG.
At full use the electricity bill would be about ₹10,375 crore a year. ₹1,338 crore of that is demand charges, payable whether or not the pumps run (CAG).
A third TMC a day was added from 2016 at ₹28,151 crore, enough to lift up to 270 TMC in 90 days against the 195 TMC cleared. The CAG called it unwarranted; the government says it is needed to catch the short flood season.
The three barrages together hold 35.87 TMC; Mallanna Sagar alone holds 50 TMC.
Medigadda is the only barrage below the Pranahita confluence at Kaleshwaram. The water it lifts is mostly the Pranahita's, which joins the Godavari about 20 km upstream.
